Computer Science at Columbia Engineering: what LionPlan checks

The groups below are the ones LionPlan actually checks for this program. They were transcribed from the 2026-2027 Bulletin. Confirm them with your school before you register.

  1. Prerequisite to the major

    Introduction to Computing for Engineers and Applied Scientists. All CS majors should take it in their first or second semester. Unlike the Columbia College major, this one requires it.

  2. Calculus

    All of these

    All of these: MATH UN1101, MATH UN1102, APMA E2000.

    All three. APMA E2000 also carries a required 0-point recitation, APMA E2001, which is not matched here.

  3. Physics

    One sequence

    One sequence: Sequence 1 (PHYS UN1401, PHYS UN1402), or Sequence 2 (PHYS UN1601, PHYS UN1602), or Sequence 3 (PHYS UN2801, PHYS UN2802).

    One complete two-term physics sequence — both terms of whichever you pick.

  4. Chemistry or Biology

    Choose N

    Choose 1 of: CHEM UN1403, EEEB UN2001, EEEB UN2005.

    One lecture course, taken in semester I or II. EEEB UN2005 does not exist: the Bulletin prints it with no title and no link, and its own course endpoint has no record of it, so nothing can ever match it. If you took Intro Biology I (BIOL UN2005) for this requirement, it is almost certainly what the Bulletin means — but we cannot confirm that, so ask your adviser to tick this rather than trusting us.

  5. Chemistry or Physics Laboratory

    Choose N

    Choose 1 of: PHYS UN1494, PHYS UN3081, CHEM UN1500, CHEM UN1507, CHEM UN3085.

    One laboratory course, taken in semester III.

  6. The Art of Engineering

  7. Linear Algebra

    Choose 1 of: COMS W3251, MATH UN2010, MATH UN2015, MATH UN2020, APMA E2101, APMA E3101.

    Choose one. COMS W3251 and MATH UN2020 are not in our catalog, so those two routes will show as unmet — a gap in what we hold, not a judgement about your record. MATH UN2015 may satisfy this and the probability/statistics requirement at the same time — the department says so explicitly.

  8. Probability / Statistics

    Choose N

    Choose 1 of: IEOR E3658, STAT UN1201, STAT GU4001, MATH UN2015.

    Choose one. MATH UN2015 may simultaneously satisfy this and the linear algebra requirement without any additional class.

  9. Introductory Programming

    Choose N

    Choose 1 of: COMS W1004, COMS W1007.

    COMS W1004, or COMS W1007 for students with prior experience. COMS W1007 is not in our catalog, so taking it will leave this requirement showing as unmet — that is a gap in what we hold, not a judgement about your record. A 4 or 5 on the CS AP exam exempts you from this and leaves nothing on your record to match either.

  10. Data Structures

    COMS W3134, or the honors course COMS W3137. COMS W3137 is not in our catalog, so the honors route will show as unmet — that is a gap in what we hold, not a judgement about your record.

  11. Computer Science Core

    Advanced Programming, Discrete Mathematics, Computer Science Theory, and Fundamentals of Computer Systems. All four required.

  12. Area Foundation Courses

    12 points matching COMS or CSEE or CSOR or CBMF courses, numbered 3000 to 9999, not counting courses already used for another group in this program.

    Any four COMS or jointly-offered computer science courses (CSXX or XXCS, excluding CSER) worth at least 3 points at the 3000 level or above — 12 points. Only COMS, CSEE, CSOR and CBMF are matched here. A thesis may replace up to 6 of these points.

  14. General Technical Electives

    Attested

    You confirm this yourself. Four courses, each at least 3 points and at the 3000 level or above, from: any SEAS department, Astronomy, Biomedical Informatics, Biological Science, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ecology/Evolution/Environmental Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, or Economics. The Bulletin says there are no exceptions to that list.
